Welcome to Reefland!
It could be a different species of coralline algae. Can you get a picture posted? That would help immensely.

Hi raycopp,

Do a search here for cyanobacteria, I would almost bet this is what you are seeing. Can you easily blow it off the rock?

No, i will not blow off the rock at all. It looks more like a sponge of some sort. Is this at all possible?

A sponge is possible. I happen to have one that is dark red. Does it have any sort of volume, or is it flush against the rock?

Yup it is possible it is a sponge or other type of coralline. It will be hard to say without a picture.

Thank you for all the replies. It does have volume and yes it could be considered dark red. It is not taking over the tank. I have a 200 gal and maybe there are 20 or so
