Refugium mud vs Miracle mud?

For a 240g setup, in our sump I plan on making it a 40g refugium. Instead of using a skimmer, live sand and live rock in the sump. I thought it would be cheaper to get miracle mud or a similar product. I have heard many success stories with miracle mud and no skimmer, would this product be similar to miracle mud? http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...pc=1&N=0&Nty=1

I don't know. I know what "miracle mud" is and it's not exactly what the manufacturer says it is: http://www.inlandreef.com/Testing/MManalysis.html

By actual examination, miracle mud is approximately 2/3 quartz sand and it contains no evidence of being of marine origin.

Whether it "works" or not is a different subject.

Use the "search" tool on Miracle Mud. Lots of previous discussions, lots of analysis, I say it is a marketing success!

And I will just reiterate, don;t think you can get by without a skimmer using this product, or any other substrate alone. A skimmer will become your good friend.

alright, I will get a skimmer, it could only do good. I guess I will use a live sand bed (how thick?) with live rock fragments instead of mud then, any thoughts?
