How much flow??

I am setting up a ten foot long tank. I need to setup the closed loop. Since three sides are viewable (2 long, one short) the return will have to setup from above the tank.

How much flow do I need? Any suggestions on the returns? Any suggestions on pumps?

This will be setup in the living room, so to avoid the wrath of the wife, I need a quiet pump!!

For a 613-gallon tank, you should shoot for a total of approximately 6,000-9,000 gph of flow. Not all of that should go through the sump. In fact, you may want to limit the amount that goes through the sump to 2,000 gallons or less to keep the noise down. The rest of the flow can be provided by a closed loop (or two) or by Tunze Streams or similar.

The Dophin Ampmaster 3000 pumps are very quiet.

You are a brave soul. Good luck!

Is Mitch making a tubular steel stand for you? Or are you constructing a wooden stand on site? Either way, you will need excellent insulation in the walls of the cabinet and the doors will have to be very tight fitting to keep the noise level down. I assume that your tank will be vented through a connection in the wall at one of the ends of the tank, right?

Is your equipment going under the tank or is it going in a separate equipment room behind the end of your tank?

I am building the stand out of steel. Since the tank will weigh so much, the floor needed to be reinforced. Instead, I decided to make the reinforcement go through the floor and be the stand. Sounds simple enough, right? And let me tell you, the wife LOVED this idea!

Yeah, I figure i would have to install an exhaust fan leading outside. Haven't gotten that far yet.

I'll post some pics of the "stand". Maybe that will help clarify the chaos.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by this. Is your living room on the ground floor? Is the house built on a concrete slab?

OK, I just read your other thread. You have a basement. We don't have those down here in Louisiana. They would be called swimming pools if we did.

Anyway, that will work fine provided that your basement has a strong concrete slab.

I bought two of these pumps from this guy and he did not charge me for shipping. If you call him he will work with you. He was very helpful. I have seen these pumps in action they run very quite and stay cool.

Hi Skriz! Great evolving setup you have there, mate. Provided your Missus gives the ok , what about mounting your pumps in the basement and bringing the pipework up through the legs of the stand. You're going to have a pretty large sump anyway so the basement location would save space and be very quiet.

Regards, Tone

Thanks guys! Yeah, I thought of running the pumps from the basement, but that would be a LOT of head pressure. The plumbing would run atleast 20 feet up!

Tone, you don't even want to know how much and what I hear from the wife! I am going to have to come strong this Christmas!

One of our board members solved that problem by building a raised platform in his basement. Sort of like a mezzanine floor if you will. His sump and associated equipment was located on this platform that was several feet above the basement floor. He built stairs to reach the platform. He said it was necessary to do that in order to cut down on the noise in the living room -- something about his wife telling him to "do something about all that noise!"

hmm, now that's an idea! this platform might be the lesser of two evils. She definately does not want me to start another project. And she would flip if I encroach on another room (basement). But, she might like the no noise idea. I need to work on my sales pitch

You may not realize this yet but you have a much bigger problem on your hands than noise. You can't dump all that evaporation into your living room. Same goes for all the heat from the lights. A tank that size has to be vented to the outside or your living room will turn into a sauna.

One end of the tank is agaisnt a wall. I can go through this wall to the outside of the house. So, it can be vented out.

Heat from the lights...well, what can I do about that other than turn up the a/c?

If you vent the hood to the outside of the room, the heat and humidity will be vented to the outside.

Yes, you will need adequate air conditioning capacity to handle this extra heat but at least you will be getting rid of a lot of it if you go with an enclosed hood that is vented to the outside. This would require small ventilation fans mounted in the hood blowing room air into the hood and then a larger ventilation fan exhausting the hot, humid air from inside the hood to the outside.

Ask Kevin for suggestions.
