Hey Martin!
I use mud in the small tanks fuge. I have heard that it doesn't benifit all that much and not worth the price. The nice thing about mud is its fine consistancy. That seems to be good for the critters and provides a great place for plants to ancor...

I used sand; a buddy used mud. His 'fuge has incredible macro algae growth (he got starts from me) with lots of pods... mine has pitiful looking algae that is pale and often gets covered in slime. I'd vote for mud.
