disease, plz help!

hello, i have a kole tang that i know is sick but im not sure with what. i have a very nice hawaiian yellow tang and a pigmy swallow tale angel that i do not want to get sick as well. that is why i am posting this thread. ive looked in a couple of couple of books and couldn't find anything to quite match what he has. and know you that you guys are pretty good with just about everything. im working on getting some pictures but it is hard cause he is almost always hiding. but here is what ive noticed about him. he hasn't been eating, no matter what i feed him. he doesn't swim around much and is always hiding. his colors have dulled quite a bit and he has spots on his body and by his gills that are kind of buldging out and are a very dull purple. he appears to have like a circle of missing skin but then in the middle of it the skin is just fine. so it kind of like an island sorta(it is hard to describe). his dorsal fin seems to have like eggs on it. what is this? im not completely sure, but i kinda looks like a thin layer of mucus is on his skin like i read in a few books, but im not sure if it is just the fading colors or if it is a mucus. but thats all i can see right now, im trying to some pictures and i hope to post some very soon. plz help. thank you, kyle and craig.

Hi kyle and craig,

To get a picture, use the Post Reply button right under the last post in this thread and on that page, click on the Manage Attachments Button.

For your fish problem, the spots and "eggs" on its dorsal fine sounded like Inh (Cryptocaryon irritans) until you said they were purple. C. irritans are white specks so I don't think that is it. Perhaps Black Ich?

What all have you tried as far as food? Have you tried anything with a garlic supplement?

these are all the pictures i have right now. its hard to get a good picture of him when he is hiding or swimming and the zoom on my camera isnt very good. but as for food, we feed them mostly ocean nutrition flake food and algea rolls (if that is what it is called. the stuff you put on the clips). otherwise we feed them shrimp pellets and frozen or alive brine shrimp. we havent been using anything with garlic since it doesnt look like ick. but hope the pictures help alittle bit. anyother questions, just ask. oh yea, we are treating the water with Rally. i dont know if that will help but we have been using for a 5 days now. its seems to help a little bit but not enough. thx. kyle and craig

P.S. in the second picture you can kind of see one of the spots behind his fin. and in the last picture, you can see the "eggs" on his dorsal fin. thx again. kyle and craig.

I could not make much out from the pictures--but a recommendation that I have is that you start putting garlic (or garlic supplement) in your tank as it can boost his own immune system. Will it cure him--I doubt it--but it might buy you a little extra time to be able to ID what it is.

I would suggest a Quarentine tank, and treat it with a broad spectrum anti-biotic. It looks to me like a fungus. Not eating and breathing hard are also symptoms of a fungal infection. DO NOT treat your main display tank, the anti biotics will almost certainly kill at least some of the beneficial bacteria, leading to poor water quality.

Medication Boosting Stuff? General Cure tablets? Be very careful, in this hobby you have to be very specific and make sure you do not over medicate the fish. Most medications are TOXIC even to the fish if you overdose.
