To reefland it's been very informative for me in the thread. I would like your help in understanding why you use vineger to clean your pumps. I'm new into the reef game and love the peace it gives me. I love to learn as much as possiable for my sucessful development.thank you for your input.

Hi The Godfather,

First, I moved your post to a new thread of it's own as it seemed for fitting, hope you don't mind.

Vinegar is effective at removing calcium buildup on the pumps internal components, like the impellar and magnet. The calcium buildup reduces the pumps output so cleaning it off occassionally is a good idea to maximize the pump performance.

Hi Godfather,
I answered this on another post, but since you asked it again, 1. it takes acid pH to disolve the calcium that precipitates on the pumps. 2. distilled vinegar is reef safe (in low quantities) - you don't have to worry about killing lots of things in your tank with this acid, 3. distilled vinegar is readily available at just about any grocery store and is cheap, 4. distilled vinegar doesn't eat the skin off your fingers if you get it on them.

Just as Bubba said. Vinegar=Acetic acid. It will dissolve Calcium.

I even run a diluted amount of vinegar thru my becketts on my skimmer about once every 2 months. It sure seems to help.
If you soak your powerheads in a vinegar/water solution, all it takes is a toothbrush to remove the Ca deposits.
