Green Mushroom Toadstool leather

I bought this coral yesterday from the LFS and they said it was a Green Mushroom Toadstool Leather it has 2 stalks with a pineapple brain in the middle of them..this morning when i woke up they were laying over but since i turned the light on a couple of their "tentacles" came out but not much is this coral still getting used to my tank ?? my finger leather did the same but only for a couple of hours then he was standing back up..water parameters are fine my finger leather is doing great but i am wondering about this one he has been in my tank for about 24 hrs....

Hi Amanda_n_Jason,

Sometimes it takes few days for the coral to acclimate to the new tank and water conditions. Some do it faster than others so I'd say give it some time and if things don't improve post again.

No reason to get rid of bristle worms and many reasons to have them. These are most likely harmless scavengers that help keep your tank clean of decomposing foods, etc. I would keep them for sure.

my toadstool leather took about a week to adjust... it's doing fine now, but every once in a while he pulls in all the polyps and slumps over.... I've seen it do that when one of the crabs crawls over it's head... it seems to be a reaction to irritation

Hmmm... now that the tank is full, I could convert the pool to saltwater...

According to Eric Borneman's book Aquarium Corals, this behaviour of shedding surface layer of the dead tissue is common in all species of the genus Sarcophyton. He also states that it is not a regenerative action on the coral's part but simply serves as a way to clean itself of the accumulated waste and algae( very common occurance on the capitulum surface).
If I remember correctly, he also goes on to say that increased currents in the tanks reduce frequency of the process.

I also remember, when I kept this coral, that it took about 4-5 days to fully acclimate and expand, maybe longer... (it was about 7 years ago so I may be off on the timing a bit )
