If I had some LR in a FOWLR and used some parasite cleaner No Copper, but maybe some malachite green. Is there a way to cook out, or detox so I may use it in a reef tank?

Unless it was several hundred pounds of live rock, I wouldn't risk it. ...but that's just my opinion. It is difficult to say if there is any detox for the "parasite cleaner No Copper" without knowing exactly what the chemical composition is.

Hmmm... now that the tank is full, I could convert the pool to saltwater...

If I'm reading this correctly, what you're saying is that you have never used anything containing copper but you have used malachite green. Is that right?

If you used malachite green in an aquarium containing live rock, you probably damaged any micro-invertebrates in and on the live rock and the live rock probably absorbed a lot of the dye. I guess it all depends on what concentration you used.

While it's certainly not recommended for use in an aquarium that houses marine invertebrates, I'm not sure how long it remains toxic to them or even if it remains toxic after several weeks or months. I know that copper is adsorbed by glass and that's why it remains toxic for a long time but I'm not sure about malachite green. And obviously it's not nearly as toxic as something like copper in the first place.

I have a feeling that if you have never used copper, you may be OK with using the live rock. You may want to run carbon to make sure that you get rid of any malachite green that may or may not leach out of the rock.

I don't think I have ever seen that question before because malachite green is usually used to treat freshwater ich or when it is used to treat marine fish, they are always removed to a Q-tank.

Was it "live rock" or just "rock?" I didn't know "live" rock was used in cichlid tanks??? Live rock is calcareous coral skeletons, which is not something you would find in any of the African rift lakes.

In any case, if you decide to use it, you may as well boil it first because nothing that inhabited it in freshwater would be useful or even survive in saltwater.

It was live rock I had for my SW. But I had a bunch left over and my old lady wanted some of the interesting pieces to use. It is tonga shelf rock. and kalini reef top. Thats why I want it back for my new tank, and she is using some colliseum ornament. BTW Live rock is very useful in FW also because once a FW bacteria population starts in all its little creveices it really adds to Bio load limits.
