I would like to second scubadude's request, and to say that I want to know exactly what a "Japanese format reef tank" is.

The pics from Baywatch Babe's link are unbelievable!

The Japanese tanks seem to have very discrete LR piles, square footprints, clean glass and amazingly clear water.

Does anyone know if they are using filtration, skimmers, additives, etc?

They also appear to use much less LR than western reef tanks. I like the look of the LR mounds with some sand flats and macroalgae interposed. It looks much more realistic. By comparison, my tank looks like the Santa Rosa Wall in Cozumel.

A little bit, but when you think about $$ fluctuation, which happens everyday, sanity will get out of balance.

Hi all,

Use this translator for the Japanese tank link above to read the infos provided by the tank owners. Just enter the URL and from the drop down menu select "Japanese to English".

Cool

You know what I find very cool?
Japanese read from right to left, so they look at tanks from right to left as well (no joking, just ask any Japanese friend). So now, check out the tanks looking at them from right to left, instead of left to right, as any of us would normally do.
Check out this pic for example:

Appreciating it 'the Japanese way' makes more sence from its setup, don't you think?
Then check out the first pic, posted by Scubadude. From right to left, you find a gap between two groups of LR, after that small visual pause, you get to a second point of attention. Some Japanese reefers seem to use Bonsai techniques to decorate their tanks. Check out the vertical structures as well.

Very cool, the first pic just gave me a couple of ideas for my own tank.
Thanks for the pics and links!

I dont know whats wrong with me. Not many of those tanks look all that nice. It just looks as if they were set up for a few minutes, all arranged perfectly and photos were taken then they get broken down. It just lacks something that i find attractive in tanks in the US.. I cant really explain it.. They are amazing and they do have some nifty critters that we cant get but they just look to planned out to me..

these tanks look completely immaculate!! how do they maintain that appearance?! i remember seeing a page about a tank that had a
reverse photoperiod refugium that used calcerous algae instead of
macros! the owner said that it was better because it didn't leach
any plant toxins back to the main tank!!!
