I used it initially in my tank - and as long as you have adequate lighting, and your tank is seeded with coralline algae, it will provide calcium and a few other trace elements that coralline algae needs to grow rapidly. You must have a source of coralline algae, though; it does not spontaneously grow and Purple Up has no coralline algae spores in it. Live rock usually is seeded pretty well with coralline algae spores (unless it has been boiled). You can also seed your tank by getting some scrapings of coralline algae from another tank.
Once I started adding calcium by other means (A & B solutions initially, later with a calcium reactor) I stopped adding Purple Up. I gave the remians of the bottle to a buddy who has a FOWLR tank. His calcium consumption is pretty low. He adds this occasionally. Anyway, it won't hurt your tank if used as directed.
