Snails That Can Right Themselves?

I was wondering which snails are the snails that can right themselves when they flip upside down?

It would be nice to know which of these are sand stirrers, detritivores, and algae eaters....but not necessary.

THose are excellent links Gene! I am was just thinking I need to get some more snails too. This time I will stay away from the ever popular Astraea, and see if I can find some cowries instead. I like the sound of "money cowrie" maybe it will bring home some of its namesake!

Ironically, the most successful introduced snails in my tank are Astraea. They rarely fall off the glass and are excellent diatom eaters.

Yours probably aren't coming from Cali and Mexico though.

Hi greenbean36191,

I agree with romunov here, I have lots of Astraea snails and never have to go in and "help them up". Probably one of the best snails to have and are readily available.

The Caribbean species tend to be a lot better in that regard than what most places sell which are collected from the west coast. When you're looking for Astraea, look for those specifically sold as being from FL or the Caribbean. If you have a BB tank it's not really a problem as far as being able to right themselves goes, but the west coast Astraea come from cooler water too.

Maybe that is why we don't have the problem, we run a 75 gallon BB tank. We also have some Turbo's and some Cerith's (from when we have a DSB) and all do well.

It's probably different here. Have no idea how much stuff comes from the Carribean. There are a few whole sellers in Germany and it goes from there... Kinda like LA.
Very few stores carry Nassarius or ceriths... I'm still unable to locate a seller in Europe that sells fighting conches. Had a bunch of trouble to get a cucumber.

I'm having a hard time finding fighting conches, too... and they are native to the local waters....
