Id?

id-spontaneouscoral.jpg

This coral grew spontaneously in my tank on the live rock (the one in the front, not the mushrooms in the back).
I first noticed it about 4 months ago as a small fluorescent speck about a millimeter in diameter. I initially thought
it was some sort of coralline algae. It grew larger, and looked like a little cup. As it has gotten bigger, the
tentacles have become apparent. It's now a little over an inch long and over 3/4 inch wide.

It's beginning to look like some sort of open brain coral... anyone got any clues?

It's attached to the rock? The common brains and other LPS are usually not attached to liverock. Without that characteristic, perhaps it is a Cynarina sp.?

I'm assuming it is attached to the rock since it hasn't moved and its "lobes" now move about in the current....

It could be one of many different things:
Scolymia sp.
Lobophyllia sp.
Cynarina sp.
Perhaps we can get a little closer as it grows.

If I would to take a guess I'd say it looks like a Lobophyllia, the fact that it is attached to the substrate is simply becouse it is a juvenile. I think all of this corals attached to substrate at first and become detached later on, as they mature and grow. Unless, I mixed everything up again, as usual.
