Has Anyone had a flame Angel nip at SPS corals?
I know they (Centropyge Loricus sp?) are a threat to LPS, clam mantles and possibly some zooanthids as per scott michael's book "Marine Fishes" but has anyone had a first hand experience of them nipping at SPS? I don't remember reading anyone who has experienced this.
thanks, Brian

Brian,
I have never had a FA but I have read the SPS will be the first corals they go after. Are you having trouble with yours? |

Yup, my luck woith angels and SPS has been a pretty bad one. I had a flame angel in my 90 that was givin to me because someone was forced to break down thier tank, and they didn't want it to go to the LFS. So I gladly took it and put it in the 90 hoping it wouldn't want to eat the coral....well my hope was futile, and the little punk took a great liking to all my montiporids, although I saw it peck at the Acro's from time to time. I had to rip the whole tank apart to get it out. NOT a fun thing to do.
Now in my 55, I have had a coral beauty for almost a year, and have tried throwing some extra frags in there to grow out a bit...seems the coral beauty like the polyps on the acros, especially the microthalma... I recommend against putting a centryope (sp) in a reef tank simply because you run a risk, and its a pain the butt to remove a fish that it tricky like those ones. It can also be detrimental to move the rock around in a well established tank. -Perry |

Actually, I went to Jeff's this weekend to buy a flame wrasse but I ended up with an awesome marshall island flame angel, (still in the bag) for $16. I figured I would roll the dice on the angel, see if it eats anything. So far so good, It might nip at an LPS or a clam as stated in Scott Michaels book, but he didn't mention it will eat SPS so I'm thinking I might be ok with the SPS. (I have found Scott's words to be as good as gold, ie: lawnomower blenny may eat clams!!!)
![]() I'm not worried because if he nips the brain I can put it in my 12, if he nips my crocea I can give it to you (I'll make sure to do it early enough for you to keep it alive this time!) But I really love the SPS. They are my favorite corals now. I guess I just wondered if anyone had first hand experience on this. So far he hasn't taken second notice to anything. We'll see what happens when he gets comfortable. Worst scenario I can take him to a LFS for at least $16 credit I'm sure! Talk to you soon. Brian

I have a flame angel in the 75 gal reef. So far it didn't pick at any corals, but I have only softies (at least until I buy the MHs). I think I got one of the 'nice' kind, but on the other side, I keep it very well fed, so that might help a little.
Since I have to get rid of the 75 gal, I will turn the 200 gal into reef, there I will see what the next addition on corals will be, considering the flame angel will be one of the habitants there. I will do some compatibility test in the 75 gal with the new corals and the flame, before I move the angel to the 200 gal where it would be almost impossible to remove it needed. Joaco |

here are some pics of flame angels in reefs. The first pic is mine, the second one is Sole's flame angel in her 150 gal, the other pics are from the 'Japanese reef tanks' post.
Note: I'm NOT encouraging to add a flame angel to a reef, just showing how it's a hit or miss thing (IMO with more misses than hits...) Joaco |

I had a flame angel. Beautiful fish, but kept picking at a Kenya Tree and x-mas worms in my porites.
I could not feed him enough. If you want one in the reef, I would recommend spot feeding to keep him away from corals. To be sure, I would not put one in. Everything I read, it is 60/40 chance that flames pick on corals. |
