Tank is getting hot!!!!

Wow...My tank has been 85F for two days and I'm getting worried. I'm going to put in a window A/C in the room in the morning and I hope it helps.

My PC was about to melt too!!!!!

BigA,

I've been tracking the temp on my tank due to the new MHs that are on there and I can say, after two weeks of daily monitoring, the 4-400 MHs are adding a tad less than 1 degree/hour! Major heat input! I have since reduced my MH lighting period to only 5 hrs due to this until I decide which direction I want to go. I didn't have anywhere near this problem when I utilized the 5-250w MHs yet the 4-400w are much worse in this regard.

Hi Randy,

My tank is ranging from 82-84 with the 3 x 400watters and 2 VHOs but have those 4 x 4" fans and a fan under the stand pointing in the sump, losing 3 gal a day of water. But hasn't been real hot yet either.

Anymore frags fall off yet? How is the pool coming along ?

The A/C should deifinitely help. You may want to take a inexpensive clip on type fan and aim it across the top of your tank, or better yet, your sump, provided you have one. This alone can decrease your tank temp by at least a few degrees, by increasing your evaporation rate.

tc3 is correct, when I put a fan under my stand to blow into the sump that really helped. I am losing about 3 gal a day in evaporation.

Another thing I did was, my tank is in my office at home and the brightest sun comes in the window at the hottest time of the day so I put good window covering over the window to reduce the hot sun coming into the room. That also helped.

for sure get a fan - mine helps alot - yeah its a little big for the need but when its not hot enought to turn the air on but the tank temp is getting warm - that fan helps a bunch.

good luck

I also have floated frozen bags of ice in the sump to help cool the water down....

85-86 isn't the worst thing that can happen to your tank. Mine has been hitting 82-86 even with a 16" fan pointed at my sump. I started using the fan and running the canopy fans 24-7 once I came home to an 89 degree tank. No casualties, but they weren't too happy about it.

Yep, these 400w bulbs make it hard if not impossible to get by without a chiller. If you can squeeze by it is at the expense of 1-4g per day in top off water from evaporative cooling.

Hey Randy, aren't you running like 8 fans in and around your tank. You might want to consider swapping out a couple of those 400 watters for 2 or 3 250 watt HQI's. My 400 watt Iwasaki puts out all the heat in my tank. I hardly notice any heat from the 2x250 watt HQI's....

BTW, my tank temp runs 80-84 from late morning to midnight. House never gets hotter then 78 but the tank room stays 82-85 cause of the heat from the lights and ballast. I really need to get those ballast outside.

With a fan on the sump the temp was ~82F today...I'm still going with A/c in the room...the outside temp is just getting going here in PA.
