The biggest differences would be in taxonomy. While Alpheoideans(pistol shrimps) belong to the order of Decapoda, the manthis shrimp belongs to the order of Decapoda. They do belong to the same Class of Malacostraca. To learn more of what this Class comprises, see here.

Physically, manthis shrimps are neither true shrimp nor are they mantids, they just called such becouse they resemble both. It's carapace only covers the rear part of the head and first three segments of the thorax. ;)

i know the differance bewteen the two my ? is if you can not see them in your tank an hear one of them can you tell which is which . iknow that i have a pistol shrimp but before i got the pistol i was hearing some snapping . an was just wondering if i had a mantis or anothrer pistol
