Uh Oh - Trigger not eating
Hi,
I have searched online to see if I could get some answers as to the symptoms my new blue chin trigger is displaying but could not find any. I got him a week ago today, and he had been quarantined at my LFS for 2 weeks and treated with copper for Ich. Introduction went well in my tank and he ate greedily for the first 5 days. Yesterday I noticed that he had developed a full-body twitch. He could not just be still in the water, his whole body would twitch. He seemed/seems afraid of this twitch and it is affecting his eating habits. He locks himself into his hiding spot and when he comes out to feed now, he twitches and shoots back into his spot. Yesterday he was at least eating but he has not eaten at all today. He tried to come out then shot back into his cave. I have been feeding about 5 times a day, since he is new to the tank and I want him to gain his strength. This whole week, he has been pretty shy, only swimming freely when he can't see me. He always came around to eat though. I have a hospital tank set up, but have not removed him yet. Could this be an internal parasite? Does anyone have any ideas of what I should treat him with? Would a freshwater dip be advisable for internal parasites? There are no visible marks on his body. FYI salin is 1.024, amm 0 Nit 0 Nitrate 15 (having a struggle with nitrates!). Thanks in advance ![]() |

Just taking a stab in the dark here, but do you have a grounding probe in your tank?

Good stab in the dark - I actually don't have one - that could be causing this?

Twitching could indicate that he is not free of ich. Even if you don't see spots, there could still be parasites on his gills, which would cause irritation. How long was the fish treated with copper at the LFS? A copper treatment can be administered in two weeks, but the fish should be kept in isolation for longer to be sure that all the parasites have been killed.

Thank you for the advice. I went out and got a grounding probe that same day and the twitching has stopped completely. He is still VERY shy though, we have had him 2.5 weeks now and if I get too close to the tank he still hides! He sometimes is too scared to come out to eat.
