Hey all long time since I had a post but as most of you know I'm finishing up my undergrad this semester so I've been busy especially now that I have my tank down at school w/ me. Here's the deal...I brought all of my fish/corals down to school to my fraternity house fishtank (its a 125g) so my fish could spread their fins so to speak.....well now that the year is over I gotta take the kids back home to their 65g....the problem is the sand has accumulated this red algae/bacteria and its very unattractive and I blame it for the death of my yellow tang. a week prior to the death of my tang she was swimming really quick and would rub her body on the sand and continue swimming...other than that behavior the tang seemed fine, healthy feeding and i tried to rid the red bacteria (guessing it was cyano) by doing water changes and through using erythromyasin (sp?) which i was told would rid the tank of this stuff and it hasnt......the only way i can get it to regress is leaving the lights off for 3 or 4 days at a time which leads me to believe its a lighting issue so i got new bulbs and that didnt seem to rid me of this problem either. Long story short I dont wanna mess w/ this anymore and am considering going w/ a bare bottom tank. For those of you that dont know my tank situation here are the specs:
65g hex.
Mated Pair of Black Clowns
1 Lyretail Anthias
1 Watchman Goby
1 Blue Tang
1 Flameback Dottyback
~60-75lbs live rock
Prism Skimmer
Corals: Several Sp. of Mushrooms, Polyps, Bubble Coral, Trumpet Coral, Tree Coral, and a few SPS.
Inverts: 2 Cukes, 1 serpent star
Along with going bare bottom I am thinking of re-cycling the tank and in doing so, not adding any of the "contaminated" water into the tank the only thing that would be going into the tank would be what you see listed above.
Thanks for the input
Jon
