Swampy Smell....

I was doing my weekly 10 gallon water change when I realized that the tank has a decidedly swampy smell. Also my Green Slime Algae is back. I thought I had that crap beat. I have been running the skimmer 24/7 just like always. I have 80 or so lbs of LR. I havent really done anything different other than put some clip on algae in for the sailfin Blenny. Is it possible that this is the problem? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Edit: Neglected to put in last nights water test results.
Nitrite: between 0 and .25ppm. hard to tell the colors sometimes.
Nitrate: 20ppm
Ammonia: 0
PH: 8.2
Temp 80F
And I use RO water.

Although my tank usually doesn't have an odor, any time I play with it (stick my hands in, pulls something out, etc.) I get "the smell." I would worry more about the algae and the elevated nitrate level. Try more frequent water changes and try feeding a little less... just my opinion. I'm sure others will chime in soon. Good luck.

Thank you. I'll hold back on the feeding and change the water again on wednesday. I'll see what happens.

most algae smells "swampy". clean the skimmate out every day. maybe thats the sorce of the smell or it could be that you have a 100 snails. with that many snails some of them are brob dead and decomposing somewhere in the tank.

Excellent point Optical, I forgot about them. I'm quite sure there are some dead ones, how many though, I'm not sure. Might have to go inventory them.

I'm thinking that if the dead snails are the source of your smell, they're probably responsible for feeding the algae outbreak as well.

Re: Swampy Smell....

Swampy Smell,

Do you have a deep sand bed? If so, did you disrupt it. Do you have any black sand. When black sand is disturbed it produces a swampy smell. Hope this helps.
