black hair algae?

I have this algae in my tank and i can't identify it. It is like black hair algae and it seems to grow on some sort of rhizome. Once the metal halides come on it grows like crazy but once they shut off the algae seems to start to go away.
Thanks
P.S.-I'll try and post some pictures tonight

A buddy of mine is having the same problem!
It's growing all over the rocks, the sand, even in the corners of the tank.
He's tried everything, and it keeps coming back....
I rescued his survivng clown fish, and since I put her in the tank, I've noticed some dark green algae in a few small spots in my tank.
I don't have any hair growing, thank goodness, but I am a bit concerned.
I too, would greatly appreciate any info!

mine completely takes over the sand bed but for some reason it isn't on the rock. I dont know a bout your buddy's but mine traps air bubbles too.

air bubble-trapping algae sounds like red slime algae to me.
I had a small outbreak of that stuff once, luckily I caught it realy quick.
It's a bad kind of algae, and it doesn't have to be red. The stuff in my tank was a really dark color, almost black.

Check with your local LFS for a good treatment.

i have a young tank, a little over 2 months, so it will probably just come and go like the diatom and hair algae did. But whatever it is, it grows like crazy, and my turbos and hermits are tearing it up but not fast enough. I just read a description of red slime algae and thats what it seems like it is. I don't use RO/DI water (altough i've been planning on doing so, just haven't bought one yet) so that could be providing a source for phosphates.
