How Hot is Yours?

Your tank, of course!

Reef or FOWLR, SPS or Lagoon. How hot should they be? My books say 22-24C which is 72-75f I think, but I've been reading some other ideas that say hotter (up to 82f!) is better - an article by Dr. Shimek was mentioned but it's gone AWOL!

I like 80-82 at the high end during the day.

Mine pretty much stays in the 80-82 range as well. I have to reset my chiller though, the other day the tank reached 84!

Not the end of the world for sure, but I would like 82 to be the high point.

It usually ranges somewhere between 78-84. In the summer it might get as high as 86.

High temp is 82 usually. The low temp has been 76 in the mornings, but usually it is about 78.

So far, looks like mine is running a little on the cool side (thanks everyone). I'll trim the heater and see what happens.

I'll have to watch for drift. I've jacked it to 80 and the dendro --- wotsits seem happier!

Mine swings around from 78 to 84, but for the most part, I think it's around 82 during most of the day.

I shoot for 76-82F depending on the time of year. I haven't noticed any difference in the corals or fish in that range.

Regards,
Kevin

Matter of interest, how COLD can it go (and for how long) before the livestock starts being permantly affected? Perhaps we need a different thread on that one.

After hurricane Wilma, my tank ran about 73 degrees... I think it did the tank good since I only had ambient light and battery powered bubbler... I thought the lower temp probably reduced oxygen demand and helped to get the tank through without any losses. But I only kept it that low for the 4 days I was without power.

I normally keep my tanks 78-82 degrees F (that would be twenty something of those confounded C degrees).

This week I had the "opportunity" to live without air conditioning for few days. I shut off the metal halides on the tanks to avoid overheating. The big tank has a chiller that ran constantly and the tank maxed at 82. The smaller tank didn't have a chiller... it was running 87-88 degrees and the corals were looking mighty unhappy, so I started floating ice packs. Fortunately (knocking wood) none of the corals bleached (yet).

P.S. Chillers don't work too well when it's 92 and humid in the house.

Damn! I think I would look pretty uncomfortable at 92F and humid! Fortunately the temp in this neck of the world rarely gets that high - and when it does, I dive into the fridge!

I'm trying to rapidly grow a colony of spaghetti algae right now (not in the tank) and I wonder how much affect temperature would affect its growth... hummm...

Is spaghetti algae the same thing as chaetomorpha? I started out with a fist size piece in my refugium, and a month later took out about half... which filled a large mixing bowl.... It likes high flow and lots of light....

Absolutely ol' boy. I'm just a bit too tired to type chaetomorpha... :slap:

High flow I can do, lots of light I can sort of do - maybe I need to use a bit more patience! I'm just trying to get as much as possible as fast as possible so I can get it into the fuge - above where the resident crabs live for now. Blasted stuff sinks - and most of my flow is on the upper level - across the weirs.Reefland's Forum - Reply to Topic

I was wondering how it would do in still saltwater with plenty of light and a good dose of conventional (high NPK) plant food at about room temp (65-70) in our 'ouse.
