Finally, I am ready for a bigger tank

Dear all,

after 4 years, i am finally ready to move up from 26g to either 50g or 72g

Can you guys recommend filtration setup for either 50g or 72g?

I currently run a small Eheim and a CPR bakpak on my 26g. should I keep them or toss them? (they have been running non-stop for 4 years and i feel they are slowing down)

Or can I somehow keep the 26g running and use it as a sump/refugium or something. this is where i lack expertise. I have been stuck on a 26g for too long to improvise.

A lot depends on your available space, and the kind of tank you're setting up, (and pocketbook).

I'd keep the 26 as a sump. For the display tank I'd use an Eheim Professional II 2028 (with heater if you need heat; without heater if you don't need it). A sump pump of suitable capacity to move no less 300g per hour (for a 50g); a suitable pump for a skimmer rated for 150g aquarium; and the skimmer.

If it's going to be fish only, internal water movement isn't that important, but I'd still employ (one) in-the-tank powerhead. If you want a full reef tank, double the sump pump and use no less than one powerhead inside the 50 tank.
