no offense, but you got ripped off big time, iam positive it is a mimic tang, definitly not a blonde naso. blonde nasos are pretty pricey, and well mimics are uhh pretty cheap. I would go back to the LFS and argue and get some money back.

I posted an adult pic for you in my last reply. Check it out.

Anyway, here are some more comments from www.wetwebmedia.com about Naso literatus:

Close:

Now you know there is more than one Naso; and they all take a BIG tank. If you've got the space, you're now equipped mentally to pick out a viable specimen and house it reasonably.

A Naso in a reef tank? Not likely. They're too big and rambunctious, and much too likely to chomp on prized invertebrate and algal livestock.

IMHO, any Tang that gets 12" to 18" in length is not a good choice for a 48" long tank no matter what somebody else might write.

Ninong

P.S. - Is this the complete reference you're talking about concerning a 4-ft tank for a Naso Tang?

Four feet is a minimum length system for a small specimen; to house one for long, six feet would be better, much larger best.

I disagree about nasos in reefs. Naso tangs are my favorite fish, and i think they are great in reefs. They eat any kind of algea well except corraline, they even eat valonia. They do need a very large tank, when they get very large they also become mostly carnivores too.

ninong:i never wanted a naso i wanted this fish i was told it was a naso when i bought it .true i should have researched what i was buying before i bought but he wanted to go home with me

reefkid:sheesh you gotta rub it in dont you maybe i need to consult you before my next purchase

as for what to do about it im not sure i didnt mind that he was 100 bucks when i bought him so why should i complain now,
then again im pretty sure the girl who netted him just made a mistake and i was unintentionally overcharged.keep in mind that its been over three weeks and i dont have the receipt i dont know what ill do maybe bring it up with the manager in a lighthearted way and hope he makes it right if not ....who has the sig on here"a fool and his money are soon parted

wow, thats alot of money, even for a Red Sea Blonde Naso....

If you like the fish, it shouldn't matter the species. You paid for the fish, not for the fish species, right?

I agree that someday its gonna outgrow the tank, but hopefully you can move it up to a bigger one, or give/trade it to a reefer with a larger tank. Either way is better than stressing it and having it die in a little tank. In any case you are a couple years away from that, and while I don't recommend buying a fish that grows that big for a tank your size, whats done is done, so enjoy the little guy.

wait, are you guys saying that the mimic is going to outgrow my new 120 aga 48x24x24? ive seen bigger tangs live in smaller tanks..though i dont know how well they did for how long.i never keep a heavy fish load and always try to be sure i do right by my charges.the new 120's only disad is on length ..but i love wider tanks for aquascaping and its better for gas exchange etc. it will hold:

the mimic
my mandarin
cleaner wrass
insert fish here(small)

perry i know it was alot The Aquarium is just rediculously priced ...but they also have one of the best selections around most of the time...i went in the store on a mission to spend a hundred bucks and i did

You are certainly much better off with a Tang that gets perhaps 9" to 10" maximum length as compared to one that gets over 15" long in your 120-gal tank, but I would still tell the store about the mistake and request store credit for the difference in price between a Mimic Tang and a Naso Tang.

Just tell them that you are willing to keep the fish that they gave you but you would like to be charged the correct price. I'm sure they know what their Mimic Tangs are going for.

With all respects to Niniong, I am virtually positive that the picture posted is of the mimic tang. They are neat fish. It is in transition to its adult colors. It definitely is not the atlantic blue tang.

I have to agree with reefkid and it being a Mimic Tang. There is one for sale here looks identical to the pic orginally posted. The LFS has it labelled as "Yellow Tang?????" They have no clue...

It is defiantely not an Atlantic Blue. Mine is currently going trough its color change to blue and it never had it's fins looked like the original pic posted.

Now that I have seen the adult pic of it I may have to see what kind of a deal I can get for the one here.. lol

My first thought was Acanthurus pyroferus and that hasn't changed. Nice fish.

NINONG Thanks for the credit anyway! Thats a cool looking fish! I wish i have a tank big enough for a tang soon! The only way that will happen, is if i get rid of my S. Nattereri which Im not gonna do just yet! Im looking foward to it though, later down the line!
