Just compared the prices at ffexpress and looks like the blonde would be about 2-3X more than the mimic. There mimic in the pic looks nothing like your though. So I dont know. I am like you too, when I see some thing I want price is not a problem. As long as your happy is all that matters. Trust me Back home in Tulsa Oklahoma prices are about 2-3 times higher there then they are here. That also kicks my in the a$$.

My guess would be juvenile Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) in transition.

A. coeruleus -- juvenile coloration

A. coeruleus -- adult coloration

Ninong

P.S. - This species is an Atlantic tang that gets bigger than 12" -- http://www.fishbase.org/Summary/Spec...name=coeruleus

P.P.S. - Dept. of Corrections: I have changed my mind and now believe it to be a Mimic Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus).

Looks like its might be of the Ctenochaetus genus, but due to the body shape I'd be more likely to say its a member of the Acanthurus genus. It almost looks like a juvenile Acanthurus olivaceus, or orangeband/orange-shouldered tang, but I have never seen on so blue on the fins. It may be that it is beginning to change out of its juvenile color phase. They are commonly found around Hawaii, and in the Pacific. I really don't know with any certainty.

It is a mimic tang, Acanthurus pyroferus, it mimics 4 pygmy angels for protection from predators. It does this because it doesnt get its spine until mature, where as those angels have a spine on their gill cover for protection. The picture is one that is starting to mature, and get the Acanthurus look, with the lyrtail and body look. It has also gotten its protective spine. You can tell it isnt a juv. Blue angel it doesnt have its markings like purple tangs do on their sides, it also doesnt have dark coloring like in the pivcture.

Maybe a Gold Rim Tang changing out of his juv. colors....*shrug*

Gets about 10", Peaceful, eats Spirulina-Mysis-Kelp (normal Tang food).

Just a guess...

You have to decide what your want to do but you should also take into consideration whether your tank is large enough for a full grown adult Blue Tang. Of course, if you thought it was large enough for a Naso Tang, I guess you'll think it's large enough for this guy. How big is your tank anyway??? You really need a large tank for either this one or a Naso--probably 300 gallons minimum.

You could always print this thread and take it with you to the store. Surely they know what livestock they have been selling.

Species that have different coloration as juveniles go through a transition phase based on relative maturity and the size will vary in proportion to the adult size of the species. Some tangs change at 3" and others at 4".

One thing you have to remember, I don't agree with a lot of the minimum tank size recommendations for the larger tangs.

However, you may be in luck because I am now more inclined to believe that FishKid is correct in saying that it is a juvenile Mimic Tang (Acanthurus pyroferus), which gets no larger than 9" or 10" total length.

Juvenile A. pyroferus

Adult A. pyroferus

here is the info :

Naso lituratus (Forster 1801), THE Naso to most aquarists, or otherwise the Orangespine, Tricolor or Lipstick Tang. There are some who claim that "blonde" and "streamer" versions are different species but they're all Naso lituratus. The species will grow to eighteen inches in the wild and it is simply outright cruel to keep one in a too small, or too short system in captivity. Minimum acceptable tank length is 4 feet.
