Cyanobacteria? or something else?
hi is the dark red stuff Cyanobacteria or is it something else, also is it "good or bad"?

dont think its cyno. looks more like squamariaceae, a peysonnelia sp.

cool what are squamariaceae, a peysonnelia sp. are they a kind of coraline algie?
and i do like the look of it so i guess that makes them good!! cheers james

yeah, its like coraline. a little different though. its a encrusting alga like coraline, but its not hard, it has a soft velvet feel to it. it does not rely on photosynthesis as much as most coraline but is still calcified. IMO it adds a lot of color to the rock mixed with the blue and green coralines.

if it starts to look slimmy then it might be cyno, kinda hard to tell for sure from the pic. some of the spots look like they might be cyno the ones on the top look more like squamariaceae. possible there is both present.

I had a nano that was overrun by cyano- it didn't look like that. I also just started a new tank and my new live rock has exactly the same algae patches on it, so I don't think it's cyano.

yeah, i dont think it is cyno i think its squamariaceae, but just can not say 100% forsure with that pic.

from those pics (especially the top, the bottom picture is a little darker than what i have seen) - i would also say that its squamariaceae. i have it on some of my live rock and love the way it looks.
