not another Xenia pulsing thread ;)

Don't worry, I'm not asking why my xenia have stopped pulsing! I'm actually wondering if anyone has heard of xenia starting to pulse again after they've stopped...

I've been thinking that that just didn't happen. But it seems to be the case with some of my xenia. I could have sworn my xenia stopped pulsing after my tank got poisoned with the pesticides. But now they're pulsing again. I suppose it could be that the toxin only temporarily stopped the pulsing and once it was cleared out of them, they started up again... but that would just be so weird, wouldn't it?

And yeah, I know no one knows much of anything about xenia pulsing... but I was wondering if anyone else has seen their xenia stop pulsing and then start up again. If so, please tell of the circumstances around when they stopped and started again (or even just slowed way down, then sped up a lot again). I know this is something a lot of people are curious about. So I was just thinking it might be fun to just sit around and swap xenia pulsing stories... how about it?

There are many species of Xenia and they react differently to different conditions. Some speicies always pulse slow (X. elongata) while others speed up or slow down in response to lighting intensity. Alkalinity and PH also affect the pulse rates of some species. Often in older tanks or tanks that don't get huge water changes some species die off after 4-5 years (X. umbellata). There is another species I keep that is very sensitive to high temperatures. it will melt away at 85-86F. I have been unable to ID it but it is a slow grower that forms a huge stalk up to 4" in diameter with a 10" head. It seldom splits but can be forced to by placing rocks on it. It also likes very intense light and does best 12-14" directly under a 400W halide.

I have seen Xenia speed up and slow down back and forth many times.

Regards,
Kevin

My xenia coral actually stopped pulsing when the pH suddenly dropped to about 7.9. After a water change and a bit of pH control (back to 8.2), it did resume strong pulsing. With the addition of reef supplement chemicals, its pulsing also increased greatly.
