you don't need mh to keep corals, corals differ in their particular needs some need more light and some need less. Clams are photosynthetic but they also require supplemental feedings.

Like stated it is all about what you want to keep. T-5 lighting will keep clams and some of the light gourging sps alive(and thriving). There are alot of options for all different scenario's. May I ask what you intend to keep?

It would help to know the dimensions of your tank and what you plan on keeping in the tank.

Definitely a loaded question here. The key factors are:
What corals are you interested in?
What clams are your interested in?
What are the dimensions of your tank?

I keep corals and clams under normal output fluorescent lighting. However, I use "wall to wall" lamping.
My reef tanks have eight four foot NO's in the hood, and one tank has an IceCap 660 which overdrives four of it's eight lamps.
