what to add next

I am inherited my sister's little 12 gal tank with a clown fish and some live rock. I have added two crabs and 3 feather dusters. At the local fish supplier, I wanted to add a "mushroom", the guy discouraged me from adding too much since I didn't have a protein skimmer.

Any thoughts? I don't think he was trying to get me to buy a skimmer, just wanting me to remember it is a small tank, but my favorites are the invertebrates, just not ready to $$ to a bigger tank while learning. Thanks for the ideas, I really learn a lot from the postings and articles when I have time to browse.

they do make nano protein skimmers and I'm in the belief that an aquarium will always be healthier with one. Whether it's absolutely necessary, I don't know. I've seen nano reefs with no skimmer that were pretty well stocked. How long they last, I don't know.

Julst realize more frequent water changes are even more important when you don't have a skimmer.
