Question Compatibility

I have a couple of sand-sifting stars and I want to add a couple red-legged hermits. Now I heard the hermits will make brunch out of my stars. Is there any truth to this.

No, they won't, but harlequin shrimp would.

Rugid,

Hi, I have a sand sifting star and several red legged and scarlet hermits. The hermits have never bothered the sand sifting star.

Question

Do hermits harm corals/anemones or anything in a reef for that matter? I was told they can be damaging to a reef but what exactly do they dammage?

The problem is that they are opportunitic omnivores, and if there isn't enough food available to them they have been reported to be problematic, especially eating desired snails.

They have been known to crawl on them but I personally have never seen any harm down to corals by a hermit. Of course there are many types of hermit crabs, some are suitable and others are not. The commonly known red-legged hermits should be fine.
