yup. very possible. wrasses are well known for there jumping habits. as you found out you really need a covered top with wrasses. like eggcreating or some other screening. sorry about the loss it really sucks.

Lost mine about three weeks ago the same way. But I have a eggcrate cover. I had it off to clean, and he jumped then and I didn't see him.

i have not lost a wrasse because it decided to go carpet diving. but i have lost two jaw fish. i removed the eggcreate for feeding. forgot about it for 3 hours ish. by then they jumped for it and were found dead, still wet but dead. |

Home depot in the lighting section. It's actually just the crate that goes in the lights. 2'X4'

Here are a few pictures showing how I used white eggcrate and removable black acrylic panels to make the top of my 120-gal tank jumper-proof:

you might have to double up on that eggcrate for some fish.

The only jumpers I had were three fairy wrasses: Two 5" Scott's and one 4" Lineatus. It worked fine for all three of those. When they hit the piece that sits on top of the black acrylic side panels, it would rattle a little but it never came down.
One of my Scott's did manage to get into the corner overflow because the white eggcrate sitting on top of it (see picture) was not tied down. I think it bounced off the back wall and landed right at the back edge of the eggcrate causing it to slide just a tiny bit forward. The fish fell through into the overflow. It took me hours to get it out. I had to turn off the tank and remove all of the plumbing from the overflow compartment! After that, I used a piece of twine to tie the piece of eggcrate to the overflow grate. My wrasses would even hit the glass shield on the bottom of my two light fixtures every now and then. I'm not sure if they ever hit the bottom of the metal halide fixture but I know they hit the bottom of the fluorescent fixture a lot because I could tell by the sound it makes. I was always worried that they would get seriously harmed if they hit the glass shield on the bottom of the halide fixture. Both light fixtures were 11" above the surface of the water.

never heard of a shrimp jumping. i put two layers of egg crate offset to make the holes even smaller. something like a blue spot jawfish may even need more precaution. those guys can get out of the smallest hole
