Smile Quarentine tank

I have a ten gallon tank I would like to use as a quarentine. What type of filter would be best? Does it need to be cleaned between uses or can I keep it running? Thanks!

10 gallon is pretty small for many fish but likely ok for a small clown, damsel, goby, blennie, etc. I just have a bare bottom, some base rock, and an aquaclear filter with ceramic rings inside it. Works great.

I have a ten gallon qt and I keep it running at all times. It's bare-bones, with an incandescent light that I rarely turn on even if there's a fish in it. I keep a barnacle decoration in it just for looks. It has a little Penguin wheel filter. I haven't had to use it as a hospital tank for a year, but it has been used as a "holding" tank for a healthy fish on several occasions. Just don't give into the temptation to put a couple of damsels or something in it so it isn't just sitting there empty. Empty is its best condition.

I use a Whisper hang-on filter. I use the "bio" cartridges, which are very open sponge pads. A few days before I plan to use the Qtank, I hang the pads in the sump on my main tank to seed them with bacteria. I keep an eye on the ammonia and nitrites for about the first week after adding a new fish and do water changes if I get a spike. A water change is easy on a tank that small. New arrivals stay in quarantine for at least 3 weeks.

I'm with Bughead. I have a 10g with a pengiun emperor 400. I use ceramic rings that I seeded on my 55g. in the filter. There are no lights on the tank and two pieces of LR.

The Q-Tank has been treated with copper (in my dumber days) so nothing that goes in it will ever enter my 55. Not even nets.

BTW the q-tank is running all of the time, just in case.
