Question Found pickling lime. Now what??

While I was at the grocery store I remembered to check on this stuff. A 2 pound jar, twice the size of the largest bottle of kalc, is only $1.69. The ingredients listed nothing but hydrated lime.

Now my question is what do I do with it once I buy it? I am using a 2.5 gallon water jug as a DIY top off and I know I add this stuff to the top off water, but how much? What does everyone do with kalc?

Thanks,
Mark

P.S. It is a real shame how we are getting screwed just because we have aquariums. $30 v. $2.. Hmmm.... Let me think...

Two is only loosely associated with two by a plus sign and therefore doesn't enter the equation at all since it is only there by mere complicity. We shouldn't count it and leave well enough alone.

Mark,

The reason it costs $30 is because ... well, people seem compelled to pay it, I guess.

I've been using Ball brand pickling lime for a little over five years now - no ill effects to date. I use it exactly the same as kalkwasser - since that's exactly what it is.

Yup. People are stupid. Thank God that we are not people....

Yeah, but how do you use kalk? Never tried the stuff.

Anyway, wuelfman answered that question. However, one heaping or level tablespoon, teaspoon, soupspoon, etc, etc???

adjust to your taste
hehe
i use a 5 gallon bucket for mine i put about three heapin spoonfulls
with a little white vineger
this lets the water be supercharged (so to speak) and able to hold more kallawasser

FWIW,most people use 1 teaspoon per gal. That's about all I can get into solution.Any excess just precipitates out.

would it be ok, to put less in a smaller tank? For a 30 gal, say 1 spoon per 5 gal? becuase I only will have one coral as of this morning, and figure that since there is not as much use of it, as im putting it in. And i dont plan on getting more corals for 3 weeks.

Mark

P.s. what isle would that be down?

That is one spoon per gallon of top off water, not one spoon per gallon of tank water. Also, the solution should be dripped not dumped in.
