I figured it out!!!!

Ok, this has been bugging the beegeebees out of me for ages! I found this in my tank several weeks ago and NO ONE had any clue what it might be (not even Mike or Dr. Shimek). This one disappaered before it turned into anything else. But I've been finding others just like it. And I think I've figured it out! It's from my Christmas tree worms! It looks just like one of the "cap doors" on those worms. Now, I don't know if this is a larvae of a christmas tree work or the "shedding" of the trap door, but I'm pretty certain it came from the worms.

Now, look at this...

So what do you all think? Do you think I'm on to something here? Or am I just desperate?

Looks right to me! GOOD JOB!

Without holding both in my hand, I would say you did indeed solve your mystery.

Looks like a pretty solid answer to me. I have no idea whether it's normal to shed the operculum though.

You know Mike... it's pretty cool the way you can pull out those big biology words like "operculum." lol

If I had to guess, I'd say they're maybe shedding it whenever too much algae grows on it? I'm guessing this because the ones I've found have had big clumps of algae on them (on the same side, in the same place). I don't know though... it really is a total guess.

Those christmas tree worms are pretty. Are they fairly common? How big are they?
Hi I'm a newbie around here.

Thanks! and welcome to Reefland!!

I'm not sure, but I don't think these christmas tree worms are too common. I got really lucky. They were pretty big when I got them and they're even bigger now. The coral died about a month ago (series of tank disasters took out a couple things in my tank). But Dr. Toonen assured me that the coral is not needed for the worms to live. The death of the coral makes the worms more vulnerable to predators in the wild, but it doesn't necessarily mean the worms are doomed.

Anyway... I got them back before I was a responsible reef keeping and didn't know they were really hard to keep (and not known to live more than a year in captivity). But I've been feeding them like crazy and been trying my best to keep them alive. I'm proud to say they have lived longer than a year with me now I'm hoping they'll keep doing well. But who knows? I guess we'll see.
