really bad water
In our town we have really bad water the past year or so. The city is working on the problem. It isn't so toxic that we have to boil it but it smells bad and tastes bad. It also leaves awful mineral stains on white porcelain fixtures.
I can't imagine that this water would be suitable for fish to live in. What would be the best and most convenient solution? I hate the idea of boiling that much water, even for a small tank. |

Hi gunfish,
![]() You should invest in an RO/DI unit. This will help to remove the impurities from your water and provide the best freshest water for your saltwater aquarium. RO/DI units are really a beginners investment. |

Okay, I think I understand all the reasons as the water quality relates to salt water fish but is purchasing a RODI vital for a small 10 gallon freshwater tank? I think you're all saying it is, right?

![]() I think, if what you described your water is true.., you yourself would benefit with cleaner water to drink and cook. Something to think about. Drinking water that leaves stains on porcelain is not something I would look forvard to every morning. ![]()

Yes, it would definitely be beneficial to your tank and you.

Well, if it's only 10g, you might just want to buy distilled or R/O water from the store. With only 10g, you'll only be doing 2-3g water changes. So it might just be cheaper and easier to buy the water.

If the tap water smells and tastes bad, a RO/DI with a drinking water kit would be just as useful for the family as it would the tank.
