problem with ammonia
i need some help trying to figure out how to get my ammonia down...it's been running around .25 for a couple weeks...doesn't go up, doesn't go down...i'm fairly new to saltwater tanks...sort of got thrust into it when a friend moved and he couldn't keep his tank anymore...i work at pet supply store with an awesome aquarium section but the guys that run it are pretty stumped...any help would be appreciated...

How long has the tank been running? My guess is that your test kit is faulty. Normally it takes about 10 days to grow enough bacteria to make ammonia drop to zero. The exception is new and/or large pieces of live rock that have large dying organisms in them. It could take as long as 45 days for them to decay. Also if a large dead fish is left in the tank it could take a couple of weeks to decay. The dip strip type test kits are useless if the lid is left off of the container overnight.

the tank was up and running for over a year as a 30gal reef tank...my friend had to move and i took his tank and converted it into a 55gal...i've had it set up now for about a month...i do have some live rock but i need to get more...as for the faulty test that is what was suggested at work last night...so i need to take a water sample into work and test it there to see if that makes a difference.
