a couple questions.
Would it be ok to use a poly filter pad in place of the sponge pad in the exit side of a Aqua c remora surface skimmer box. And, would it be ok to cut back one third to a half of my lights to help with my ongoing hair algae battle? I have 640 watts of vhos on my 125? I would then slowly increase after I got a handle on it. Tank has only softys and a couple lps corals.

Yes to both questions but hair algae will grow under pretty low light conditions. So I don't think it will help much until you reduce your nutrient levels. A good quality skimmer and phosphate remover usually kills off hair algae in a couple of weeks. I would also recommend a couple of 25% water changes using RO/DI water to make sure you are not adding phosphates from ground water. Phsphate also is added to the tank from foods.
Regards, Kevin
