do they go together
do clownfishes and anemones always go together? well, i just saw a couple of pictures of clownfishes and anemones together...the set up i've seen were so beautiful...i was just wondering if this pair up is a common practice among hobbyist...

In Nature, in the Pacific, yes, anemones are clownfishes' commensal hosts. It's a symbiotic relationship -- the anemone shelters and protects the clown, the clown feeds the anemone. In our tanks, not necessarily, especially if you are keeping captive-bred clowns, as opposed to wild caught ones. You DO NOT have to have an anemone to successfully keep clownfish. And vice versa. It then becomes a matter of choice and husbandry. Are you prepared to provide the setup necessary to sucessfully maintain the anemone? This usually means fairly intense water movement and strong lighting. Hope this helps! Rebecca |

One other note: Only certain species of clownfish host in certain anemones. There are exceptions but the success rate is much higher if you match the anemone species with the proper clownfish.
