Question I need information on the banning of collecting wild corals around the world

I'm doing a term paper for my Cost and Benefit Analysis course and I'm thinking about using "The banning of collecting wild corals around the world" (<- something like that) as my topic of research. I need to research why they want to ban it, how it would help the environment (benefit) and how it would harm the reefkeepers and businesses (cost).

Do you know any specific links to articles concerning this issue? I know MaryMH has a couple of links and she is very concerned with the banning. Any other opinions?

Thanks,

Alan

Exclamation Not sure about globally...but for Florida

Well in Florida you are only allowed to harvest the corals in the Octocorallian family (mainly gorgonians) and the Sea Fans are strictly prohibited and they are protected! and you are only allowed 6 octocoral colonies per person per day. You CANNOT collect these in the protected areas though I dont know the exact boundaries but here are a few areas that you CANNOT collect ANYTHING in.

Pennekamp park
Looe Key park
Dry Tortugas boundary (recently has been revised)
Biscayne national park

LR collection is prohibited, unless you have a permit to aquaculture.

You can collect plant/macroalgae 1gallon per person per day.

Other protected species in florida are:
Hard corals
Fire corals
Longspine urchin
Sea fans
Florida queen conch
Bahama starfish

Nassau grouper
Jewfish (they need to legalize this one, these guys are getting HUGE)
Sawfish
Basking shark
Whale shark
Spotted eagle ray
Sturgeon
White shark
Sand tiger shark
Bigeye sandtiger shark
Manta Ray

HTH Let me know if you want the collection laws on Reef fish too...I have them as well

I would contact Indo-pacific Sea farms for some info on the benefit that cultured clams and corals give the inhabitants of these areas. Producing these critters gives them an export cash crop.
