    aquarium salt

i've been using instant ocean's reef crystals simply because that is what my friend was using in his tank prior to him giving it to me. one of the fish guys at work suggested i switch to seachem's reef salt because that is what he uses in his tank. any thoughts on this? any opinions as to which one is better, etc? any input would be helpful.

    thanks

I stick with what works. If your not having problems with the salt you are using why switch? If it's not broke why fix it?

I would tend to agree. There have been some sea salt studies in the past which people were quick to act on when they read the results and many had problems with corals bleaching when they did switch. I would stick with what is working for you

thanks guys...after talking to the fish guys at work today i'm convinced they are idiots anyway...one tells me i should get a naso tang for my tank...a 55gal tank...then when i point out that several of the fish at work don't look so good they say yeah we've known for a couple of weeks...hello idiots? the fish are sick...let's leave them all in the system untreated. brilliant.

    thanks again,
    rachel

I agree. Because I doubt we'll ever know for sure what salt is the "best" or even if there is a best salt. The Borneman/Lowe salt study is a joke and the Shimek study didn't really tell us anything for sure either (and it's getting out-dated anyway). Until someone does a thorough chemical analysis of these salts, we're never really going to know. Till then, I'm just going to stick with my Tropic Marin because that's the one I like. And I agree that the potential "trauma" to one's tank that could come of a salt-switch probably just isn't worth it when you don't know for sure that any other salt is really better.
