that would be adequate lighting for all SPS ....as long as your water params are up to par I dont see why not

I second what scubadude said. And also like to add it'll be best to keep the more colorful SPS near the top half of your tank, as long as its been properly acclimated to high lighting.

Mikeman, I think you might be able to keep colored acropora such as this pic, but it would aslo depend on the Kelvin rating of the 250w MH. If it is anything greater than a 65k you will lose some of the color. If you are talking about an iwasaki then watch out you'll have color. It might also depend of the tank shape. To position the MH over a 55gal. you may need to place it over the center and depending if there is a center brace you might lose some of the lighting. HTH...

Are you talking about one MH? I cont see how you will get much coverage with just one. I am buying 2 retro kits for my 55-clams, sps, few softies.

i would actualy go with 2 175 on both sides of the tank because you will lose lighting with that brace in the midel i am seting new light for my 72 bow i will be using 2 175 and 2 vho light for extra antic

mikeman, I see a problem with keeping sps corals and some of the soft corals, such as sarcophyton, in particular. Leather corals and colt corals will put off a toxin that can and has polluted reef tanks enough to crash any and all corals. That is why most of those keeping sps dedicated reef tanks either keep them alone or with clams, for example. It is very tricky to keep both together in one reef tank and keep everybody happy. Please do some research on this and see the inherit problems with doing this.

Ok no softies, but couldn't I keep some corals like open brains since they wouldn't compete for space except if I wanted to keep clams?

A couple of LPS are OK and aren't as dangerous as far as I know in regards to chemical warfare. Just be leary of the ones that put out long sweepers.

Question

Are photosynthetic Gorgonians known to irritate sps? They and some Xenia are the only softies I have in an otherwise sps dominated tank.
