Natural predators, and controlling nutrients. You might look through my 3 part article on Nusiance Algae.

what are your nitrates and phosphates? Do you have lace rock? lace rock has lots of iron in it, and hair algae loves iron...so even if you dont have lace, test for iron in case it got in there some other way.

as to how to get rid of iron, i'm not completely sure. I would think that like everything else, there is something that you can add to the tank that is like a "iron remover". As to wether those work or not, i wouldnt know as i never tried them. I had lace rock in my 55 and i had lots of HA even tho my nitrates/phosphates were 0. I took out the lace rock (oh and btw...the HA was mostly growing just on the lace rock...) and then after a while the rest of the hair algae just started dieing off too.
So imo, find the source of iron (if you even have iron that is) and try to eliminate the source like i did. What i believe happened when i removed the lace rock was that there was still a bit of left over iron...but then the remainin HA used it and once it used it all, there wasnt anything else to fuel the algae. hth |

Look for excessive nutrients like nitrate and phosphate before you look at anything else.
