    Question IPSF Acclimation Procedures???

I have the following on the way from IPSF (Fedex.com says it is in the air from Calif. right now )

    6 baby bristle worms
    6 baby Trocus Grazers
    6 Nerite Grazers
    6 Strombus Grazers
    Reef Amphipods
    Live Sand Activator
    6 Hawaian Turbo Grazers
    Wondermud
    Antheila Polyps
I would like to add the Mama Mia worms to the package

Are there any tips that anyone can offer for acclimation. I have the IPSF procedures printed but I believe I have heard others post about better acclimation procedures. Especially on the snails.

    Thanks, Ryan

ive ordered from ipsf three times and the acclimation prcedure they reccommend works fine and ive never lost a thing.as for the snail acclimation if youre thinking of the "self acclimation" technique ,putting the snails on the glass at the waters edge and letting them find their own way in sounds like a great idea but i havent tried it yet hth.by the way those anthelia polyps have taken off in my tank and are spreading ive placed a bunch of small rocks around them and if things keep progressing like they are im gonna have some to trade to lfs or whoever in a month or two

About the snails...People have said to hold them against the glass until they "stick" then let them "adjust" to your tank...however, I would first check IPSF's salinity level then it makes it easier to tell how much more acclimation you need to do. For example, if their SG is a couple of points away from yours, I would add little amounts of water to the bag at regular intervals until it matches your SG then they should be fine. I HTH, there are also many other ways to do this, but, that is what I would do.

i almost forgot there are also tons of baby strombus in my tank as well i just noticed this a couple weeks ago.i saw about 20-30 all in "formation" on one rock i guess they must have just hatched or something ...anyway youre gonna be happy...especially when you find 8 instead of 6 and 10 instead of 6 etc.....with one order i swear i had like 30 worms where i was supposed to get 6

    MastaJ,

Yes I was reffering to the salinity thing. I think I am going to go with the slow water additions to acclimate. I've heard really compelling reasons to use this but I cannot remember any of them.

Do I need to "trap the worms under a glass until they make it into the sand bed? What the LSA and Wonder Mud?

You will need to "trap" them under a small glass is you have any fish that like to eat stressed out worms...Your Yellow tang(if that profile is correct) probably will "try" them because that is the shape of their mouth and at my LFS when we feed bloodworms the yellow tangs pig out...

What IS it? The Wondermud is silt WITH worms. The LSA is small gravel WITH worms and snails and hermits. I just acclimated them like normal and dumped the bags close to my sandbed. You should have your filters/PH's off when you do this. I HTH...Any other ?'s you have I will try to answer them...

That was supposed to be "what about the LSA...." You answered it in spite of my poor typing.

The Profile is correct but the Tang in in the Q tank right now. He had a small case of Ich and better safe than sorry.

I think you have answered all of the questions I have!

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Orion

God getting a IPSF kit is so exciting....hehe....A shot glass works REAL well when put upside down on the sandbed with the worms. Let us know how everything turns out The LSA is basically a mixture of worms and pods and maybe a couple small snails....the mud may have some critters in it too....try to disperse all critters evenly on your SB ....its real hard to do this w/the mama mia or spaghetti worms though (cant remember which ones) cuz they will all be lumped together in a ball and they are very fragile....I didnt want to try and pull them apart, cuz I was afraid that I would hurt them....if anyone has suggestions on how to seperate these worms successfully w/out hurting them I would love to hear it GOOD luck Orion!

I just don't get what the attraction is about a lot of worms and snails.

Why am I sitting in front of my tank at 1:30 in the morning looking for a worm? Why do I get such a big rush when I actually see one? I guess I need to get a life, but that might interfere with my worm watching.

BTW Scubadude, I guess I should drink the bourbon before I use the shot glass, right

Yeah....just dont drink 2 much bourbon or you might mistake a shot glass full of tank water for bourbon

For the snails, you can try it or not. But I took a tip from Dr. Ron for the last couple of additions to my tank and it seems to work great.

Empty all water from the bag except about a teapoon. Reseal the bag and float it in your sump or tank for about an hour. Then just pop them in. He said as long as you keep the humidity in the bag about 100% they will be fine and then you don't have to worry about the salinity difference.
