I don't know a whole lot about clams- but is it gaping? Or are Derasas always like that? Otherwise, it looks very pretty- what lights do you have?

errrrmmm...i also know next to nothing about them, apart from what i have read here--> Derasa
but from pictures and others i saw at the LFS they have all been like this. i sure hope its not unhealthy i only got it yesterday. as for my lighting its a DE 10000K 150W MH and my water depth is only 14"(34cm) so hopefully its getting enuf light, its only about 4-5" long at the mo aparantly they can grow up the 20"-24" but thats a few years off yet. cheers james

No it is not gaping at all. Gaping usually describes a condition in Tridacna clams when they loose control of the adductor muscle and two shell parts just spread apart uncontrolably, pulling excurent syphon apart rather wide as well. The most noticeable sign when clam is gaping, to me personally, is when incurent syphon is pulled completely in and wide open. I know then that the clam may be on it;s last leg. The clam in the picture looks healthy to me. ![]()
