At least I now know that a blue tang, a regal tang, a palette tang and a hepatus tang are all the same fish, provided they aren't talking about either of the other two blue tangs.
On the West Coast they are commonly called "Hippo Tang"

You're right! I forgot that one. We should probably reverse the current practice of using the common name with the scientific name in parenthesis. If we write: Paracanthurus hepatus (blue tang, regal tang, palette tang, hepatus tang, hippo tang), then people would know we're talking about their fish, provided they speak English. It would take a long paragraph to include all of the common names in every language.

But how can it be a slug if it has a shell?
Having a shell or not doesn't really matter. Lots of marine slugs have shells. Basically it's a slug if it's a snail that has detorted. For all of the sea slugs the gills are also behind the heart as compared to the rest of the marine snails with their gills in front of the heart. Lots of them, including many of the sea hares retain the shell even as adults.

If you go to the seaslugforum and search for "detorsion" they've got a few articles about how snails became slugs and show a few examples of shelled slugs.

It's a Scutus spp. like it has already been identified as. They're fairly reef safe, however they will eat the flesh off of some soft corals if given the chance. I had 2 in my tank to begin with, and now I've got nearly 7. They've multiplied rather quickly and seem to be beneficial cleaners. Mine have yet to try nibbling at any of my corals as of yet, however I keep quite a tight ship and very little gets past me.

Hi Sara,

No, I decided to go to Pittsburgh this year, so hopefully I can see you there.
If you are coming I owe you a drink...

Ha! Well, I do think I'm the one who owes you... but if I remember correctly, you pour a mean class of scotch, so I doubt I could refuse!

Re: Mysterious Stranger

That is great Sara! I like the scale of putting your hand in those images too. So you and Gene are going to Pittsburg huh? I guess that made it easier to decide which one to go to!

I have been bouncing back and forth....

Re: Mysterious Stranger

You should definitely come Mike! The Pittsburgh guys are great. With them and Gene and everyone else, it should be a good time for sure.
