    steam distilled

okay heres the situation. I recently figured out that the rodi water filter that i had was bad, it was causing all this unwanted algae to grow, so i temporarily switched to bottled distilled water. When i went to pick up some more they were out, so i had my dad buy some from jewel. Only problem is it says it is steamed distilled water, from jewel(if that helps). Will this water be okay?

Steam distilled water will be just fine- but it's cheaper at Walmart, at least around here.

Just tell your wife that having a tank teaches you all sorts of new DIY skills...which will save lots of money around the house...so you can buy more stuff for your tank...so you can learn more skills...

"Steam" distilled water just refers to the method used to create the distilled water. Most commercially available distilled water is in fact steam distilled. The quality of the water is connected not only to the process used to make it, but the equipment/materials the distillate comes in contact with.

That is, you can steam water and condense it, but if the condensing unit is made of copper or certain other materials, the 'distilled water' is contaminated with those materials. Thus steaming is the process, but the water doesn't have to be pure.

Ask the packager/manufacturer for a typical analysis of the water. AND test the water yourself for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate at least. Use it to make up some salt water and then test that also to determine if you find any abnormal test results. If you have a meter, give it a total dissolved solids (TDS) test (or ask for that number from the packager/manufacturer in addition to the typical analysis).

I have tested TDS on several brands of distilled water from local stores and they all tested 0 TDS.

Just re-read my posted reply. Not one of my best!

I left off that, if you have concerns then by all means test. In general, products in the USA that are labeled as distilled water meet the purity standards of same.
