I have a nice growth Green star polyps, I've notice a grayish type of growth (small) on top the purple layer. It soft to the touch and spreading very slowly. Any idea or thoughts on what this is, bad, good or is it the start of new purple growth.

Sounds like a type of sponge, got any pics? That would help a bunch.

Willis--1998-2009---I will miss you.
Also, have you noticed that this growth is having a negative effect on the polyps? Do they still open fully?
hmmmm... gray growth, i sometimes get i film over my stars then i just point a power head at them for a few secs and its gone.
any help?
thank you for your responses, well so far it doesn't seem to have a negative effect on the polyps and I fan the corals daily. The tank is a 29 gal Oceanic cube. The polyps are waving do to the water motion. Someone told me it might be new growth, I only had the coral for 5 weeks now. All the water chemistry is excellent and I perform water changes weekly about 3.5 gals. I use reef crystals salt. Nice growth on rocks about 30 lbs.

If the star polyps are opening and otherwise seem healthy, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just keep an eye on them looking for any signs of decreasing health.
I believe what I'm seeing is NEW growth starting. I'll have to wait another week or so to be sure. The middle area is starting to take on a new color, on the darker grey side.
I would expect to see new growth on the outside of the mat, not in the middle of it. But, hopefully your right.![]()
