Ph problem

I could be becoming an alarmist due to this tank and enabled by this website, but I think this may be a real problem. I just recieved my Pinpoint Ph Monitor yesterday and set it up before work this morning. I calibrated the monitor properly and had a reading of 7.7 shortly after the lights came on. Having a green sinularia that looks like a tree that lost it's rigidity in the trunk caused me to immediately add some Seachem Ph/hardness buffer according to the instructions of 1 teaspoon/20gallons. I slowly added the buffer over a 45 minute period and left for work before it finished equalizing.

I just checked with my wife who said the monitor is reading between 9.5 and 10.1 but jumping back and forth. I have not added any supplements recently, except the buffer, and the Ca has been holding steady in the upper 400's. Without a full rundown of tank parameters, does this sound like a hardware problem, or could my Ph really be that high? I have to run home from work and head right to Scuba Certification class until 11:30 tonight and have to be up at 4:00 to catch a flight to Vegas in the morn. As usual, every time I go out of town, there is a major problem.

Thanks as usual.

Re: Ph problem

When I have that kind of thing happen to me I take some water to the local fish store and see what they get. If they get the same reading with thier test probe, its the water...if they get a different [lower reading] its your probe.

You almost need a point of reference besides your own equipment otherwise you have no 'control' to compair to. If your probe is the issue, the LFS may be able to calibrate it for you and verify the calibration before you leave the store.
