Saddle anemone questions

Does anyone have any experience keeping the saddle anemones? I have read they are easier to keep than the other types of carpet anemones, but still not real easy. They just got one in at my LFS and it is huge and is absolutely beautiful. They told me they would throw in the clown that has adopted it if I bought it. It is $39.99. I don't even want to attempt it if it beyond my capabilities. Also, do they move around alot like some anemones? This thing is huge and if it decided to move around a lot I can only imagine the damage it would do to my montis. Also, is a 90 gallon large enough for one?

Re: Saddle anemone questions

Hello,
I've had one for about a year now. It moves around quite a bit. It is attached to the bottom of the tank through 4-5" of substrate and when it moves it stays attached to the bottom plowing up the sand. They also require metal halide lighting. I tried to keep it under VHO's but after 6 months it started to loose it's stickyness and I moved it to another tank with a 400W HQI bulb. It became sticky again in a few weeks. They also eat quite a bit (3-4 silversides every couple of days). It was given to me because it had eaten a few fish.
IMO an H. crispa or M. doreensis are better choices.

HTH,
Kevin

Re: Saddle anemone questions

IMO, all of the carpets, including Stichodactyla haddoni, get too large for a 90-gal aquarium.

P.S. -- We used to have a picture of one of these in a 90-gal tank in a thread someone posted here about five years or so ago but that picture was lost in one of the many software upgrades. It had obviously outgrown the 90-gal tank and the poster was asking if anyone wanted to adopt it.

Well I guess that settles that. I will just leave it at the pet store and hope that somebody gives it a good home. I just hate seeing it ( it is already HUGE) in a 20 gallon tank with normal flourescent lighting.
