The most inexpensive route I've heard of is to make it yourself....then buy a fews nice pieces to seed it with.

Most of the live rock comes from the same sources, if you're talking about South Pacific live rock. You can buy it in box lots drop shipped to you from L.A. or you can pay a lot more for hand-picked fully-cured live rock. Obviously it's cheaper to buy a couple boxes of "pre-cured" live rock that is drop shipped than to pay by the pound for fully cured live rock that is hand selected for you.

The "pre-cured" live rock is NOT fully cured and will have to be cured in your tank for three or four weeks. The fully cured live rock will have minimal dieoff and will usually complete any ammonia release within two or three days after being added to your tank.

There are many sources for live rock online, check some of our sponsors. Here's one as an example. The boxes are cheaper because they're shipped to you from the South Pacific via LAX. The other stuff is fully cured in the vendor's own curing vats and hand selected to your exact request.
