Unhappy water has smell

First off let me say what a help this web site is!!!! But now I turn to you for a simple maybe stupid question, My tank is about 1 month old there are no fish or other critters in the tank, just some live rock 80lbs, used a biozyme to jump start the process and today noticed that the smell from the tank has changed, what is this? checked all levels and nothing to be alarming. the tank is 95 gallons with three (3) maxi jet 1200 power heads, and a 175 pro clear sump with bio-balls and a rio 1700 return pump, tank has the overflow built in, also a 8 watt uv lamp, and berlin air lift PS, I also run a pengiun 400 biowheel filter in the sump after it has ran past the balls with carbon, so if anyone can give me any help it would be great, also any suggestions if the setup lacks anything, Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

Re: water has smell

Hey! Welcome to Reefland.
I can think of quite a few things that might be causing it.

If your liverock wasn't fully cured when you introduced it....that could contribute to a very foul smell.
If this is the case heavy water changes will help you out. They should be done on a regular basis anyway so start thinking about getting into a WC routine.
The shop that I work for has a sump full of bioballs on one of their FW systems. It stinks so bad I can't stand it. That method of filtration is extremely outdated and harmful to your system.
If you research it you will see why.

The skimmate in a protein skimmer will also have a foul smell and should be changed, cleaned regularly.

The biowheel really isn't necessary with the PS.

Re: water has smell

Your carbon should also be changed about every 10 days. I run carbon the last 10 days of the month before I do a water change. When I do a water change I remove it and on the 21st of the month put new carbon in.

Regards,
Kevin
