Angry Starphire Tank is in Town!

Hello All,

Well, the fatefull day has finally arrived. My Starphire Glass tank from Inter-American is sitting at a trucking company a few miles away. I called yesterday to check on it and the lady said it would be in town today. Now is when the pain in the ass starts, as I'm sure every other person who has had to deal with Consolidated Freightways knows. She asks if I have a way to come get the crate, I say no, she says it's gonna cost 80 bucks for them to deliver it to my door, I say I paid shipping to my door, and that's where you're going to deliver it....she says "o.k. we'll call tomorrow to set up a delivery time." Bright and early this morning I get another call, from CF, this time she says " the crate weighs about 500lbs, we'll need to use a truck with a lift gate, which will cost 84 dollars." I said "I paid for shipping to my door and am not interested in paying another 84 dollars." She asked me if I had a pick up truck to come get it, and again I told her that I paid shipping to my door. She then says "I'll try to get ahold of the shipper and see if he'll pay it." I said, "You can try, but he won't." At this time I am waiting for a return call. Seems to me that they just want another 80 bones, no matter what because they asked for 80 to bring it then they asked for 80 for the truck with a lift-gate. I'll keep you posted on the events of the day.
Ed

Exactly who did you pay for the shipping to your door. Was it the freight company or the retailer.? Just curious.

Big Ed ~

This is what I found out based on my experience with Consolidated Freightways:

The freight charge actually is based on delivery to your house but what they consider delivery to your house (or business) is that their truck will pull up and you will unload the crate using your forklift or labor crew. Most--but not all--Consolidated Freightways terminals have at least one smaller truck with a power lift gate that is available at "extra charge."

Evidentally, in the trucking business, it is the responsibility of the recipient to unload the cargo. This is most certainly true in the case of full truckloads and it is probably also true in the case of LTL (less than truckload) shipments. (In fact, I am now 99.9% sure of this.)

It will require four healthy guys (wearing work gloves because of splinters in the crate) to move the 500-lb crate, whether it is on the truck or on the ground in your driveway. When the truck shows up at your house (assuming it is their regular large truck and not one with a power lift gate), the driver can move the crate to the edge of the truck bed using a pallet jack. Then the four of you on the ground slide the crate off the truck and lower it to the ground. You are going to need four guys to move this thing, even after you uncrate it. Maybe you could invite some guests for a barbeque.

I know from dealing with trucking company's a lot that all provide tailgate delivery, which means they open the tailgate and bring it to the rear of the truck, from there its the receipants responsiblity to get it off the truck.

Knowing this, I went to the CF terminal and got my tank myself with my company flatbed. My tank crate was 661lbs. They did happily provide the forktruck to load the crate onto my flatbed truck.

Good luck but this is SOP for all trucking companies.
